Why Learn Sign Language?

I recently made a commitment to work on improving various aspects of my life in order to become a more well rounded person. For example, when I realized that I hadn't taken any kind of class since I graduated from college 10 years ago, I decided there and then that learning something new would be a priority. After a lot of consideration, I decided that I would like to learn sign language, so I recently purchased materials that will help me do that.

I've been telling my friends and family about my new interest, and the first question everyone asks me is why I want to learn sign language. After all, I'm not deaf or hard-of-hearing myself, nor is anyone in my immediate family. While hearing impairments would obviously be the most pressing reason to learn sign language, it's certainly not the only one. Here are just two more reasons that helped me make my decision.

First, I really wanted to try something different. I always hear about friends who are studying Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, or any number of other languages, but none of those appealed to me. I would much rather learn American Sign Language (ASL) because of its relative uniqueness.

Second, I want to learn sign language because of its utility. I can say with certainty that I'll have a chance to use my ASL skills at some point in my life. Whether it's helping a hearing impaired customer when I'm at work, or carrying on a casual conversation with someone I meet at the gym, there's bound to be ample opportunity for me to apply my knowledge in practical situations. That's more than I can say about my friends who studied Japanese for all four years of college, and then never spoke another syllable of it after they left campus!

Once I decided to learn sign language, I just had to find a class that I could attend. Since my work hours are always changing, I didn't want to commit to specific evening or weekend hours at my local community college. He shared his ration of water with the plant when all the sailors were near to perishing of thirst. Clieux finally arrived at the island of Martinique and this one single plant started commercial coffee plantations that successfully rivaled the plantations of the Dutch. It is ironic to note that the initial cutting was taken from the coffee plant that was given to King Louis XIV as a gift from the Dutch!

King Louis XIV had a passion for coffee and enjoyed preparing it for guests in his golden coffeepot. After plantations started in Martinique a few years later a young Portuguese officer from Brazil charmed the French governor’s wife in French Guiana. She secretly saved some coffee cuttings to present to him as a token of her love for him. The Portuguese officer planted the cuttings in Brazil and began what are now the largest coffee plantations in the world.

Have you ever heard someone say an elephant never forgets? Maybe someone you know was compared to an elephant in a similar way, as in having the memory of an elephant. The mind of an animal can be substantially large in its learning capacity, using memory to perform amazingly in many ways.

The mind can shut down memory, temporarily or permanently, depending on whether or not what it endured was a traumatic event that the mind just refuses to access or a scant bump to the head. People have protected themselves subconsciously by disengaging the memory. The mind sometimes seems to play tricks on us by confusing one memory with another. Sometimes this causes the person to be unable to function in society. What seems to be a problem with memory can actually be a problem with the processing of information going into the mind.

Prescription medicines can sometimes affect the memory, especially if you choose to combine a dangerous mixture. Even over-the-counter medications have to be closely monitored in their ability to work well with each other or with certain prescription medications. Prescription medications can also improve your ability to use your memory, clearing up other health problems that might interfere with your mind's performance.

The mind is complex in its capabilities, but without memory it cannot perform even the simplest of tasks. The body depends on memory to function. The blind person's life depends upon the memory of the miniature horse every day and night for as long as they are together.

A blind person must have the ability to use other senses besides their eyes. Their memories have to be capable of helping them function in their own homes. If something is out of place, their routines will suffer, and possibly an injury will occur.

The memory is the storage capacity of the mind. Often neglected, often unappreciated until something occurs to help us take notice of just how important it is to our well-being.
